Maidstone

Shipping Containers for Sale in Maidstone Kent

Estimated Population: 89,684

Although Stone Age finds have been made locally, it is the Romans who first gave some importance. Their road from Watling Street at Rochester to Hastings across the Weald passed through the site, and two villas have been discovered. They were also among the first to extract stone (the sandstone known as Kentish Rag) from the area.

This part of the Medway Valley was important too, by the time of the Domesday Book. In the Middle Ages there were two hospitals here built for the care of wayfarers, especially those on pilgrimage; and a “college” of secular priests.

’s town status was confirmed when, in 1549, it was incorporated. It had originally been governed by a portreeve, 12 brethren and 24 commoners under the direction of the Archbishop of Canterbury. However, when the people of rebelled against the crown in support of Thomas Wyatt in 1554, this charter was revoked, although a new charter was established five years later, when was created a borough.

In medieval times the part of known as Grange was a limb of the Cinque Ports, and the maritime importance of the area continued for centuries afterwards. The title Chatham Dockyard is something of a misnomer, since a large part of it lay within . The dockyard was founded by Queen Elizabeth I on the site of the present gun wharf, the establishment being transferred to the present site about 1622.

In 1667 a Dutch fleet sailed up the River Medway and having landed at Queenborough on the Isle of Sheppey, and laying siege to the fort at Sheerness, invaded in what became known as the raid on the Medway. The Dutch, after some consternation and panic from royalty, were eventually driven out, but the incident caused great humiliation to the Royal Navy.

Rochester

Shipping Containers for sale in Rochester Kent

Estimated Population: 27,125

Pre-Roman – Evidence of Neolithic settlement nearby at Kit’s Coty. Belgic remains were found in 1961 by R E Chaplin under the Roman levels. Coin moulds suggest that this was a centre of some importance.

AD 43 – Romans found a fortified town by a bridge - they called it Durobrivae (one theory). Alternatively, Aulus Plautius set up a small fort, which was not needed long, as Kent was soon settled. The Roman settlement provides us with the present High Street and Northgate/Boley Hill.

225+ – This was replaced by stone, which is still extant. There is evidence that the Romans bridged the river at the same point as the present bridge, and constructed a causeway 14 ft wide, over the marshy ground the Strood Side of the river.

“I thought I would just say a big thank you for your help with sorting out the delivery of our beautiful new container. I expected on my return to work to arrange to have it moved to its final resting place, but was very pleased to see on my return it is sat exactly where we needed it. Once again many thanks...”
