Estimated Population: 170,994
The name Walsall is thought to have derived from the words “Walh halh”, meaning Valley of the foreigners (referring to the Celts). By the first part of the 13th Century A.D. Walsall was a small market town, with the weekly market being introduced in 1220 AD. The Mayor of Walsall was created as a political position in the 14th Century.
Queen Mary’s Grammar School was founded by Mary I of England in 1554, and the school carries the queen’s personal badge as its emblem; the Tudor Rose and the sheaf of arrows of Catherine of Aragon tied with a Staffordshire knot.
The industrial revolution changed the town from a village of 2,000 in the 16th century to a town of over 86,000 in approximately 200 years. Walsall finally received a railway line in 1847, 48 years after canals reached the town..

Hereford was founded in around 700 AD and became the Saxon capital of West Mercia. The present Cathedral dates from the 12th century. Former Bishops of Hereford include Saint Thomas de Cantilupe and Lord High Treasurer of England Thomas Charlton.
During the civil war the city changed hands several times. On September 30, 1642, Parliamentarians led by Sir Robert Harley and Henry Grey, 1st Earl of Stamford occupied the city without opposition. In December, they withdrew to Gloucester because of the presence in the area of a Royalist army under Lord Herbert. The city was again occupied briefly from April 23 to May 18, 1643 by Parliamentarians commanded by Sir William Waller but it was in 1645 that the city saw most action. On July 31 a Scottish army of 14000 under Alexander Leslie, 1st Earl of Leven besieged the city but met stiff resistance. They withdrew on September 1 when they received news that a force led by King Charles was approaching. The city was finally taken on December 18 by Colonel Birch and Colonel Morgan.
Nell Gwynne, the mistress of King Charles II, was born in Hereford in 1650, and a street ‘Gwynn Street’ is named after her.

Estimated Population: 105,452
In 1528, the town was made a royal town after the granting of a charter by King Henry VIII. The formal Mayoral chains of office are now on display in Birmingham Council House.
A preserved section of Icknield Street is located within the park, showing the presence of Romans in the area. The preserved length runs for 1.5 miles (2.4 km) through the park. It is believed that Roman soldiers may have encamped on Rowton’s Hill in Sutton Park, as the name denotes “the camp on the hill”. There has been little archaeological work on the road though a short trench was dug in February 1936 and another in May 1936. Amongst the finds in the trenches and in other areas of the park were Roman coins from the reigns of Constantine I and Diocletian.
The town borders Erdington and Kingstanding in Birmingham, Streetly in Walsall, the district of North Warwickshire and Lichfield and Tamworth in Staffordshire. The area in general is regarded as one of the most prestigious locations in the West Midlands and Central England; a 2007 report by the website Mouseprice.com placed two Sutton Coldfield streets amongst the 20 most expensive in the United Kingdom

Birmingham

Estimated Population: 970,892
Birmingham has a recorded history going back 1000 years. In this time, it has grown from a tiny Anglo-Saxon farming village into a major industrial and commercial city.
The Birmingham area was occupied in Roman times, with several military roads and a large fort. Birmingham started life as a small Anglo-Saxon hamlet in the dark ages. It was first recorded in written documents by the Domesday Book of 1086 as a small village, worth only 20 shillings.
In the 12th century, Birmingham was granted a charter to hold a market, which in time became known as the Bull Ring. As a convenient location for trade, Birmingham soon developed into a small but thriving market town.

Dudley

Estimated Population: 194,919
Dudley has a history dating back to medieval times; a castle has stood in Dudley since the 8th century, the present castle dates from the 13th century, and provided the centre around which the town grew.
The town industrialised rapidly in the 18th and 19th centuries, and its population grew dramatically. Due to its heavy and highly polluting industries it became a central part of the Black Country. The main industries in Dudley included coal and limestone mining. Other industries included iron, steel, engineering, metallurgy, glass cutting, textiles and leatherworking. Most of these industries have declined in recent decades.
Dudley was mostly made up of farms and factories surrounded by the occasional cottage until the 19th century, when many rows of terraced houses with terrible sanitation were built. These in turn were cleared between the 1920s and 1960s to make way for council owned houses and flats. The Dudley area also consists of many privately owned houses including some late 19th/early 20th century homes which are still standing but have been modernised to keep up with modern sanitation standards.

Solihull
Shipping Containers for sale in Solihull West Midlands
Estimated Population: 94,753
Solihull comes from the name ’soily hill’. It has existed since medieval times when it was founded as a market centre, and it later became an important coaching stop. The town is notable for its historic architecture, which includes many examples of timber-framed Tudor style houses and shops. The historic Solihull School dates from 1560. The Parish church of St Alphege dates from a similar period and is a large and handsome example of classical British Church architecture, with a traditional spire making the Church visible from a great distance.
Unlike nearby Birmingham, the industrial revolution largely passed Solihull by, and until the 20th century Solihull remained a small market town. In 1901 the population of the town was just 7,500, but by the 1960s the population had grown to over 100,000. This growth was due entirely to overspill population from Birmingham
Until the early 1960s the main high street remained much as it must have been in the late 19th Century with several streets of Victorian terrace houses linking High Street with the Warwick Road. The construction of the central shopping area involved the demolition of all these streets together with the large Victorian Congregational Church that had stood on the corner of Union Street and Warwick Road.

Derby

Estimated Population: 229,407
The town has Roman, Saxon and Viking connections. The Roman camp of ‘Derventio’ was probably at Little Chester/Chester Green; later the town was one of the ‘Five Boroughs’ (fortified towns) of the Danelaw.
The popular belief is that the name ‘Derby’ is a corruption of the Danish Deor-a-by (Village of the Deer), however some assert that it is a corruption of the original Roman name ‘Derventio’. The town was also named ‘Darby’ or ‘Darbye’ on some of the oldest maps, eg. Speed’s 1610 map. The city is one of the few cities that have retained a name with a Viking origin, like York, which had the Viking name of Jorvik. The city recently celebrated its 2,000th year as a settlement.
New research (throughout 2004) into the history and archaeology of Derby has provided evidence that the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons probably co-existed, occupying two areas of land surrounded by water. The saxon Chronicles (c. 900) state that “Derby is divided by Water”. These areas of land were known as “Northworthy” and Deoraby, and were located at the “Irongate” (North) side of the city. Ron Mackeown of Derby Heritage Development Trust has produced a paper on this subject and his findings are already being acclaimed by the academic community.

West Bromwich
Shipping Containers for sale in West Bromwich West Midlands
Estimated Population: 136,940
West Bromwich was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1066, the name meaning “the little village on the heath of broom”. A Benedictine priory existed in West Bromwich from the 12th century around which much of the town grew. In 1727 the town became a stop on the coaching road between London and Shrewsbury and its growth began. In the 19th century coal deposits were discovered, ensuring that the town grew rapidly as an industrial centre, with industries such as gun and nail making developing.
In 1888, West Bromwich became a county borough, incorporating the village of Great Barr. It was expanded in 1966, acquiring most of the borough of Tipton and Wednesbury urban district, before joining with the neighbouring county borough of Warley in 1974 to form the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell.
West Bromwich suffered heavily in the Cholera epidemic of 1831 which spread northwards into the town. A temporary board of health was set up and a hospital opened in the former Revivalist chapel in Spon Lane. The natural gradual slope of the land provided drainage within the soil, however, urbanisation made this increasingly difficult and drainage along the streets was described as inadequate. The West Bromwich Town Improvement Commissioners was established in 1854, and they tackled the drainage problem in the town. They appointed members to new titles and in the 1880s bought land in Friar Park for a sewerage farm.

Worcester

Estimated Population: 94,029
The site of Worcester was first used by the Roman Empire in the 1st century, linking Gloucester to Wroxeter. In AD 407 the village was thought to have been abandoned, only to be resurrected as a settlement in the mid 7th century by the Saxons, giving it the name of “Weogoran cester”.
The town was almost destroyed in 1041 after a rebellion against the punitive taxation of Harthacanute. The town was attacked several times in the civil war (in 1139, 1150 and 1151) between King Stephen and Empress Matilda, daughter of Henry I.
By late medieval times the population had grown to around 10,000 as the manufacture of cloth started to become a large local industry. The town was designated a county corporate, giving it autonomy from local government.
