Pre-Roman – Evidence of Neolithic settlement nearby at Kit’s Coty. Belgic remains were found in 1961 by R E Chaplin under the Roman levels. Coin moulds suggest that this was a centre of some importance.

AD 43 – Romans found a fortified town by a bridge - they called it Durobrivae (one theory). Alternatively, Aulus Plautius set up a small fort, which was not needed long, as Kent was soon settled. The Roman settlement provides us with the present High Street and Northgate/Boley Hill.

225+ – This was replaced by stone, which is still extant. There is evidence that the Romans bridged the river at the same point as the present bridge, and constructed a causeway 14 ft wide, over the marshy ground the Strood Side of the river.

While Oldham’s history can be traced back to the 11th century, it was the Industrial Revolution — and cotton in particular — that laid the foundations for the town’s prosperity. By the end of the 19th century Oldham was recognized as the most productive cotton-spinning town in the world. At the peak of the town’s cotton industry, over 360 mills were operational, with over 10% of the world’s cotton spinning taking place in a single town; the last cotton mill closed in the mid-1990s, and redundant mills are now a dominant feature of the town’s landscape. The town also lead in the production of cotton-manufacturing machinery, with Platt Brothers exporting equipment throughout the then British Empire.

In 1900, Winston Churchill was elected Oldham member of Parliament. He held the constituency for the conservatives until 1904

From 1963 to 1965, the town was overshadowed by the terrible Moors Murders whose victims were buried on nearby Saddleworth Moor.

Although there have been settlements in the area since before Roman times, mostly being offshoots of Portchester, Portsmouth is commonly regarded as having been founded in 1180 by John of Gisors (Jean de Gisors). Most early records of Portsmouth are thought to have been destroyed by French invaders following the Norman Conquest. The earliest detailed references to Portsmouth can be found in the Southwick Cartularies.

While in the primary manor of Portsea there was a small church prior to 1166 (now St Mary’s at Kingston) Portsmouth’s first real church came into being in 1181 when John of Gisors granted an acre (4,000 m²) of land to Augustinian monks at the Southwick Priory to build a chapel dedicated to Thomas a Becket. This chapel continued to be run by the monks of Southwick Priory until the Reformation after which its possession was transferred to Winchester College. The modern Portsmouth Cathedral is built on the original location of the chapel.

In 1200 King John issued another charter to Portsmouth reaffirming the rights and privileges awarded by King Richard. King John’s desire to invade Normandy resulted in the establishment of Portsmouth as a permanent naval base.

In Roman times, Warrington was a centre of industry and was founded as a crossing place of the River Mersey for Roman soldiers to go north from their base at Deva (modern Chester) some remains have been found at Wilderspool.

In medieval times Warrington’s importance was as a bridging point on the River Mersey, and it was a fulcrum in the English Civil War. The armies of Oliver Cromwell and the Earl of Derby both stayed near the old town centre (the parish church area) at Cromwells Lodgings (now a restaurant) and the Marquis of Granby public house. Dents in the walls of the Parish church are rumoured to be have been caused by the cannons used in the Civil War.

The bridging point at Warrington was vital to the town’s future growth. The Red Lion Inn on Bridge Street is an example of a building built exclusively for people using the bridge.

Bolton is a large town in Greater Manchester, in the North West region of England. Situated close to the West Pennine Moors, 10 miles (16 km) north west of the city of Manchester, it is the largest and most populous settlement of the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, and has a population of 139,403,a decline from previous years, as the populace migrate from the old town boundaries to the more palatial wider borough, the borough population now being 262,500.

Historically a part of Lancashire, Bolton originated as a small settlement in the moorland known as Bolton le Moors. During the English Civil War the town was a Parliamentarian outpost in a staunchly Royalist region. In 1644 Bolton was stormed by 3,000 Royalist troops led by Prince Rupert of the Rhine. This attack, which later came to be known as the Bolton Massacre, resulted in 1,600 residents being killed and 700 taken prisoner.

Noted as a former mill town, textiles have been produced in Bolton since Flemish weavers settled in the area during the 15th century, developing a wool and cotton weaving tradition. The urbanisation and development of Bolton largely coincided with the introduction of textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution. It was a boomtown of the 19th century and, at its zenith in 1929, 216 cotton mills and 26 bleaching and dying works, made it one of the largest and most productive centres of cotton spinning in the world. After World War I the British cotton industry declined sharply and by the 1980s cotton manufacture had virtually ceased in Bolton.

The New Town of Milton Keynes was designated in 1967 and deliberately located roughly equidistant between London, Birmingham, Nottingham, Oxford and Cambridge so that it would be self sustaining and become a major regional centre in its own right. Milton Keynes is the largest of the so-called “new towns” built during the 1960s to allow for urban expansion in the southeast of England. When Milton Keynes was designated, some 60,000 people lived in what is now the Borough.

Design and planning was delegated to the Milton Keynes Development Corporation (Chair: Lord Campbell of Easkan; CEO Fred Lloyd Roche). Their strongly post-modernist designs featured regularly in the magazines Architectural Design and the Architects’ Journal. Regrettably, the Government wound up MKDC in the early 80s, transferring control to the very much less imaginative English Partnerships. Design guidance was weakened and subsequent built environment developments are barely distinguishable from the anonymous suburbs of other towns and cities around the UK. Conversely, the “river valleys, water courses and extensive landscape buffers within Milton Keynes provide a good example of how environmental assets can be integrated into new development.” (MK&SM Study). Fortunately, the superb organic environment is under control of the Parks Trust and continues to be one of the major attractions to living in the town.

The New Town encompassed a landscape that has a rich historic legacy. The CLUTCH Club Milton Keynes site holds a collection of archival photos and recorded interviews compiled by residents of the older villages incorporated within Milton Keynes. Larger MK-related historical collections have been created at The Living Archive, and a broader family of sites and links to archeological studies of Milton Keynes is maintained by the Milton Keynes Heritage Association, which “exists to encourage and develop co-operation and co-ordination between all members having an interest in heritage within the Milton Keynes district.

Although often thought of as a settlement with no early history, the name Middlesbrough can trace its roots back a long way. Mydilsburgh is the earliest recorded form of the name and the element ‘burgh’ denotes an ancient fort or settlement of pre-Saxon origin. The burgh may have included a monastic cell and was probably situated on the elevated land where the Victorian church of St Hildas (demolished in 1969) was later built, while the ‘Mydil’ or middle could be either a person’s name or a reference to Middlesbrough’s location, half way between the great Christian centres of Durham and Whitby.

After the Saxons the area became home to Viking settlers and it is argued by some that old Cleveland has the highest density of Scandinavian parish names in Britain. Names of Viking origin are abundant in the area - for example, Thornaby, Ormesby, Stainsby, Lackenby, Maltby, Normanby, Tollesby and Lazenby which were once separate villages that belonged to Vikings called Thormad, Orm, Steinn, Hlakkande, Malti and Toll, but now form suburbs of Middlesbrough. Lazenby was the village belonging to a Leysingr - a freeman; Normanby, a Norseman’s village and Danby (in neighbouring North Yorkshire), a Dane’s village. The name Mydilsburgh is the earliest recorded form of Middlesbrough’s name and dates to Saxon times (400 to 1000 A.D.), whilst many of the aforementioned mentioned villages appear in the Domesday Book of 1086.

In 1801 Middlesbrough consisted of just four farmhouses, but during the latter half of the nineteenth century experienced a growth unparalleled in England. It was famously dubbed by Gladstone ‘an infant Hercules’ in ‘England’s enterprise’.

The 20th century showed a great decline in the city’s fortunes, especially with two world wars and the Great Depression. The city’s industries became uncompetitive, leading to high unemployment, urban decay and poor health for the city’s inhabitants.
